Neurofeedback
Train Your Brain to Regulate Itself
For some clients, especially those with high sensitivity, the nervous system requires a specialized approach. We offer Infra-Low Frequency (ILF) Neurofeedback, a modality that moves away from “one-size-fits-all” database training and instead relies on your specific, real-time responses to guide the process.
How the Othmer Method Works: A "Calibration" Process
Clinician Kim Logan uses the Othmer Method, which differs fundamentally from traditional QEEG-based neurofeedback.
In traditional neurofeedback, a brain map dictates the training.
-
We adjust the frequency setting.
-
We ask: “Does this feel more settling, or more stimulating?”
-
We rely on your subjective reporting to “tune” the training to your specific nervous system.
This is not a passive medical procedure; it is a collaborative, experimental process where we work together to find the settings that help you feel most grounded.
At 70 West Counseling, we distinguish between Research Efficacy and Clinical Utility.
-
Research Efficacy: Traditional neurofeedback has robust Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) proving it changes brain waves. The Othmer Method (ILF) does not yet have this level of peer-reviewed validation. We cannot point to fMRI studies to prove the mechanism of action.
-
Clinical Utility: We offer this service because we treat it as an “N=1” Clinical Trial—meaning an experiment of one.
Why We Offer It: We do not offer ILF because a study says it works for everyone. We offer it to see if it works for you. We track your symptoms session by session. Since this method relies entirely on your response, you are the data. If you report feeling calmer, sleeping better, and reacting less to stress, we continue. If you do not report subjective improvements, we stop.
Who Might Benefit?
This modality is designed as a support tool for self-regulation. We often explore this with clients who report:
-
Sensory Overload (where standard interventions feel “too much”)
-
Subjective feelings of high arousal (anxiety/panic)
-
Subjective feelings of shutdown (freeze response)
-
Sleep disruptions
(Disclaimer: This is an emerging, wellness-focused modality. It is not a medical cure. We encourage you to review the literature and determine if this subjective, feedback-based approach fits your needs.)
Important Note on Insurance (Medicare, Medicaid, & Private Plans)
Because we value financial transparency, we want to be clear about coverage before you begin.
Medicare & Medicaid Coverage Medicare and Medicaid (Health First Colorado) do NOT cover the Othmer Method. Government insurance plans are strictly limited to treatments with high-level evidentiary support (Randomized Controlled Trials). Because ILF Neurofeedback is classified as an “investigational” or “experimental” modality, it is a statutory exclusion for these plans. We cannot bill Medicare or Medicaid for this service.
Private Insurance Coverage
-
Traditional Neurofeedback: Some private plans may cover traditional, QEEG-guided neurofeedback under standard biofeedback codes (e.g., 90901) for specific medical conditions.
-
The Othmer Method (ILF): Because this method lacks the specific evidence base required by most medical policies, almost all private insurance companies will deny coverage.
Payment Expectations Please expect that Othmer Method Neurofeedback will be an out-of-pocket expense. We can provide you with a receipt for your records should you wish to attempt reimbursement using a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA), though approval is determined solely by your plan administrator.
